Stefan Schmeink. Foto Rolf BoesveldA comment by BERTHOLD BLESENKEMPERThere were three of them: after Peter Wiegel and Martin Schmidt another SPD member in the fight for mayoral candidature has now thrown his hat in the ring with Stefan Schmeink. This confirmed the 56-year-old merchant in the field today compared to Made in Bocholt. About the motives and motives, however, the deputy chairman of the local chapter remained silent. He wants to internally communicate this to his comrades before he goes public. Thus, the party is spoiled for choice. It is expected that all three of them will vote in favor of a delegates meeting. Theoretically conceivable would be a primary vote. But this does not (yet) provide for the statute of the SPD. An internal selection committee for the local chapter chairman Bernhard Pacho had previously expressed a majority for Martin Schmidt. He was in a duel with Peter Wiegel then initially the clear favorite. With Stefan Schmeink, however, the desired candidate of the Ortsverbandsspitze gets a more than promising opponent candidate (see below). For Pacho personally, the previous finding process is a leadership fiasco. The selection process proposed by him has - except for himself - kept virtually nonexistent. For the Bocholter, this raises the number of potential mayors to five. We re-introduce them as well as their strengths and weaknesses: Thomas Kerkhoff (CDU): The 37-year-old has been mayor of Gescher for four years and has experience in managing an administration. He is well-networked as a deputy chairman of the district CDU in the party and has numerous contacts to Dusseldorf and Berlin. His advantages are also his biggest drawbacks. Kerkhoff begins his candidacy in Bocholt with a broken word in Gescher. Two years ago, he publicly promised to stay there. In addition, he knows little about Bocholt. Martin Schmidt (SPD): The scientific speaker of the LWL textile factory in Bocholt seems to be the favorite of the Social Democrats. The 51-year old is eloquent and committed as well as secretary of the city association and knowledgeable citizen for years politically active. The art historian born in Bernkastel-Kues, however, came to Bocholt with his family first 2012 and is still very little networked here. Peter Wiegel (SPD): The 60-year-old is the politically most experienced in the circle of previous candidates. He has been a member of the Council since 2009 and has been the faction leader of his party since 2013. As a Bocholter, he is very well connected in the city. However, he currently seems to lack the backing of the party. Stefan Schmeink (SPD): The 56 year-old is probably the most popular of all previous applicants. He is a native Bocholter, as chairman of the FC Olympia Bocholt also in addition to politics voluntarily active and well connected. His weakness: so far Schmeink has not pushed forward politically and always contented with the second row. Frank Büning (Die Linke): Whoever is a researcher at the Westfälische Hochschule comes from the Greens and after the break with the party he founded the Free Greens and now joined the Left. He proves in the Council as a group leader of the Free Greens / The Left great political instincts and is well connected as Bocholter in the city. As a leftist, however, only a few chances are given to him in the rather conservative Bocholt. [...]
