Town Planning Officer Daniel Zöhler predicted a "chainsaw massacre", if in Bocholt - as requested by the SPD - again a tree protection statute would be introduced. Before such a scheme comes into force, many garden owners would quickly seize the opportunity and fell unloved trees, he predicted in the city council.
CDU and FDP spoke of patronizing the citizen. Such a statute was abolished years ago by a large majority, because it led to constant discussions, it was said. Finally, the council followed Zöhler's suggestion to work out a concept that would reward tree planting and tree preservation rather than punishing their precipitation.
