"Of penguins, polynes and pack ice"

Borken district. Workshops, lectures, guided tours: until Friday, October 2, 2020, the events as part of the “Climate Weeks 2020” will run partly digitally and partly on site. From waste prevention to educational offers to information events on a wide variety of other climate protection activities and offers in municipalities, institutions, society and companies - the diversity of climate protection is reflected in the thematic diversity of the offers. On Thursday, October 1st, 2020, a digital “closing event”, so to speak, begins at 19 p.m.: The polar researcher Dr. Thomas Hollands was an employee of the Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Center for Polar and Marine Research, in Bremerhaven on a research trip to the Antarctic. In his lecture “Of penguins, polynes and pack ice - a research trip to the Antarctic”, he reports what preparations were necessary, what he experienced there and what research results were obtained.
In addition to many pictures, Dr. Thomas Hollands also share some thoughts from his diary and give insights into the research work on board and on the ice.
He also answers the question of how he ended up in Antarctica via detours from his home in western Münsterland and what he experienced on the way there, how research was carried out there and why in the end he didn't return home via South America as planned, but South Africa came. After the lecture there will be the opportunity for questions and discussions.
The district of Borken and the EnergyAgency.NRW ask that interested parties can use the website www.energieagentur.nrw/klimaschutz/klimanetzwerker/von_pinguinen_polynjen_und_packeis_eine_forschungsreise_in_die_antarktis register for the lecture.
